Affirmative Action is a policy that was implemented to increase the representation of women and minorities in areas of employment, education, and business from which they have historically been excluded from, through active measures to ensure equal opportunity. Affirmative Action is surrounded by much controversy.
What did we believe before the shift?
Before Affirmative Action women and minorities were often denied from admission to schools and jobs even though they were equally or more qualified then some Caucasian males. If a Caucasian male and a male of foreign decent were equal in everything and they applied to the same school, the Caucasian male would always be accepted to the school over the other male.
What do we believe after the shift?
Affirmative Action caused employers and schools to give equal opportunities to women and minorities. Now if the Caucasian male and the foreign male were equal it was required that the foreign male be admitted to maintain certain number of racial minorities.
How do we still act that we believe the old belief?
When it comes to finding a job many employers still discriminate by not hiring minorities. In todays world it is still much easier for a Caucasian male to find a job then it is for a minority.Despite the enormous gains made by the civil rights and women's rights movements, women and people of color still face unfair obstacles in business and education. An astonishing 70% of schools are not in compliance with Title IX, the federal equal education opportunity law. For every dollar earned by men, women on a whole earn 74 cents, African American women earn 63 cents and Latina women earn 57 cents.
